Est-ce qu’on se moque toujours de ton accent quand tu es aux USA ?
On ne se moque plus vraiment mais parfois les gens aiment bien répéter ce que je dis. Mais ça me fait rigoler parce que la plupart du temps, ils sont mauvais pour m’imiter.
Est-ce que tu perds ton accent anglais quand tu es là-bas ?
Non mais quand je rentre des USA, je dis des trucs comme ‘gas station’ ou ‘chips’ alors qu’en Angleterre on dit ‘petrol station’ et ‘crisps’. L’accent ne part jamais. Je pense qu’à partir d’un certain âge, ton accent ne change plus…
Combien de temps du passes aux USA, en moyenne, chaque année ?
Depuis environ six ans, je vais aux Etats-Unis au moins trois fois chaque année. Parfois j’y reste un mois, parfois deux ou trois… J’y vais souvent. J’aime bien, j’ai quelques amis, et je passe la plupart du temps avec Louie (Barletta) et les gars d’Envoi.
Tu squattes où ?
A San José. Avant, j’habitais dans la maison de Jerry Hsu. C’était mon propriétaire ! J’ai habité chez lui pendant à peu près deux ans, en faisant des aller-retours avec l’Angleterre… Là j’en reviens, j’ai passé deux semaines chez Louie. Il me trouve toujours un petit coin où dormir chez lui !
C’était comment d’avoir Jerry Hsu comme proprio ?
C’était marrant ! Jerry Hsu est l’un de mes skaters favoris et le fait qu’il soit mon propriétaire rendait la situation folle mais il était cool. Mais tu finis par oublier à qui appartient vraiment la maison dans laquelle tu vis… Il était juste normal.

J’ai revu récemment ton clip d’intro chez Es où tu es dépeint comme un rigolo, presqu’un imbécile. Comment tu l’avais pris à l’époque ?
Je ne sais pas… Je ne pense pas que le mot ‘imbécile’ soit le bon pour être honnête, mais je m’en fous un peu. Il fallait que je filme pour ma vidéo ‘Welcome to Es’ et je me suis flingué la cheville alors au lieu de skater, je faisais autre chose. Je pense qu’il a (Mike Manzoori – NDLR) compris un peu comment mon cerveau fonctionne ! C’était marrant ! Ça fait un moment que je ne l’ai pas revu mais ça me rappelle de bons souvenirs. Je venais d’arriver aux Etats-Unis, je ne comprenais pas encore vraiment comment ça fonctionnait… C’est un endroit assez dingue pour quelqu’un qui vient d’une petite ville anglaise. J’adore ! Je suis impatient d’y retourner !
Quels sont les avantages et les inconvénients d’être un skater pro ?
Les avantages : tu passes ton temps avec tes potes, tu voyages tout le temps et tu t’amuses, parce que c’est du skate, et c’est ce qu’on aime faire ! Le seul inconvénient est que je paye un loyer pour une chambre à Londres mais je ne suis jamais là ! En gros je paye 700 livres par mois juste pour stocker mes affaires !
Combien de temps tu passes sur Instagram au lieu de ton skateboard ?
Aujourd’hui, le skate… tu peux passer deux heures à essayer un trick et quand tu n’es pas en train d’en faire, il y a des chances pour que tu sois en train de te faire chier ou que tu sois allongé par-terre, alors tu vas sur Instagram. J’adore Instagram ! Disons que tu suis 600 personnes, tu vis pratiquement avec eux, tu sais exactement ce qu’ils font, ce qui est assez étrange parce que tu n’es pas vraiment avec eux. Mais c’est pas grave !
La plupart des skaters pro sont payés pour publier des trucs sur Instagram, non ?
Moi non, mais je le fais quand-même. Tu vois un truc marrant, tu le postes. Pour moi c’est pas essayer d’être cool, je poste des trucs juste parce que c’est marrant. Certaines personnes parviennent à vivre grâce à Instagram, je respecte ça, mais c’est beaucoup moins drôle (ce qu’ils postent) !

Do you still get laughed at with your english accent when you’re in the US?
Not really laughed at, but people like to repeat how I speak sometimes but I find it funny because a lot of times in the US, they’re really bad at it.
Do you lose it a little bit, when you’re out there?
I don’t lose my accent but I come back from America saying words like « gas station » or « chips » which in England are petrol stations and crisps but the accent never goes. I think when you get to a certain age your accent never changes…
How much time do you spend in the US?
From about six years ago, I’m in the US at least three times a year. Sometimes I go there for a month, sometimes for 2 or 3 months, I go there quite a lot. I love it out there,I’ve got a few friends, and I usually hang out with Louie (Barletta) and the Enjoi guys.
Where do you stay?
In San José. Before, I was living at Jerry Hsu’s house. He was my landlord! I lived there for like 2 years on and off, going back and forth from there to England. And I was just there recently for 2 weeks, staying at Louie Barletta’s house. We make a little room situation and stay there.
How was it having Jerry Hsu as a landlord?
It was very funny. Jerry Hsu is one of my favorite skaters in the world and he was my landlord which is a pretty crazy situation but he was mellow. But you kind of forget that the house you’re living in is his or whoever. He was just normal.
I just watched the welcome to Es video again where you are really pictured like a funny guy, almost stupid. How did you take it back then?
I don’t know… I don’t think stupid’s the word to be honest but I didn’t care really. I was trying to film my welcome to Es video and I fucked my ankle so instead he (Mike Manzoori – EN) was just filming me wandering around and doing stuff. I guess he captured a bit how my brain works ! It was fun ! I haven’t watched it in a while but it brings back some good memories from that time. I was new to be in America, to see how America works… It’s a pretty crazy place for someone that’s coming from a small seaside town in England. I love it ! I’m excited to go back!

What are the pros and cons of being a professional skateboarder?
Pros : you’re constantly with your friends, constantly traveling, you’re always having a good time because it’s skateboarding and that’s what we love to do! The only cons is I pay rent in a house in London to keep my stuff but I’m never there! I pay 700 pounds a month to have a room and it’s basically a storage unit that I’m paying for!
How much time do you spend on Instagram instead of your skateboard?
These days… Skateboarding… You can be trying a trick for two hours and when you’re not skateboarding you’re probably bored or laying on the ground so you go on Instagram. I love Instagram! Let’s say you follow 600 people, you’re in these people’s lives, you know exactly what they’re doing and it’s kind of weird because you’re not there with these people. But it’s all good.
Most of the skaters are getting paid to post on Instagram, right?
I’m not getting paid to post on Instagram but I still do post stuff. You see something funny, you post it. For me it’s not about being cool, I post stuff because it’s funny. People make a living out of Instagram, respect to that, but it’s not that fun (what they’re posting)!
