Si Donald Trump vous fait flipper, vous n’êtes pas le seul. S’il venait à être élu, on pourrait voir un type de migrants jusqu’ici peu connu arriver des Etats-Unis sur notre bon vieux continent. Et Nick Garcia pourrait en faire partie.

[highlight]U[/highlight]n de tes derniers posts sur Instagram était une photo de Bernie Sanders pour lequel tu prends position. Tu n’as pas peur de perdre une partie de tes followers en faisant ça ?
Je n’ai pas l’habitude de poster des trucs politiques et je ne suis pas quelqu’un d’engagé politiquement. Je n’ai jamais voté mais je pense que les choses en sont arrivées à un point où c’est devenu vraiment important pour les États-Unis et pour le monde. Je ne veux pas faire partie du problème sans avoir au moins essayé de changer les choses. Alors si je peux utiliser la petite voix que j’ai pour faire une petite différence et lui récolter quelques votes, autant le faire.

Je me fous de perdre ces gens-là. Sans offenser personne, si tu veux Donald Trump pour prochain président, alors tu peux te désabonner, pas de souci !
[highlight]I[/highlight]ci en Europe, on n’assume beaucoup moins ouvertement ses convictions politiques. Est-ce que c’est quelque chose qui se fait plus aux États-Unis ou est-ce que tu t’es simplement dit qu’il était temps d’agir ?
Je pense que c’est assez commun aux États-Unis, surtout dans le milieu du pays. Les gens s’ennuient alors ils s’impliquent dans la politique et c’est ce qui me laisse croire en la possibilité pour Donald Trump de devenir président. J’ai l’impression de pouvoir faire quelque chose, au risque de perdre des followers ou autre chose. Ce qui est en train de se passer est juste super important, alors il va falloir faire beaucoup d’efforts pour y arriver sinon ça aura été quelque chose qui aurait pu se passer, et à la place d’un candidat comme Bernie Sanders qui aurait pu aider un peu, on aura ce type qui détruira tout ce que Obama a fait ou commencé.

Oui. Je veux juste un futur pour mon pays. Si Donald Trump devient président, je ne sais pas si je resterai très longtemps vivre aux Etats-Unis. Pourtant j’adore ce pays. Mais je veux un futur pour mes enfants, quelque chose de décent qui se concentre sur les choses importantes. Moins de guerres, moins d’interventions à l’étranger, des universités pour mes enfants…

Ma femme est Australienne, donc j’ai toujours cette option ! Et j’adore l’Europe. Il y a le choix. Ce sera dur de laisser ma famille et mes amis, bien-sûr, mais je ne sais pas si je veux élever mes enfants dans un pays où un type comme ça a pris le contrôle. Et j’aurais vraiment honte pour mon pays.

J’ai passé beaucoup de temps ici et en Australie, où il y a le même genre de gouvernement. Les jeunes sont bien plus heureux dans ces pays-là parce que tu n’as pas à penser aux trucs de base. Si tu es malade, tu vas simplement chez le médecin. En Amérique c’est flippant, si tu tombes malade, tu peux ruiner ta vie. J’ai emmené ma femme à l’hôpital pour des maux de ventre un jour. C’était rien de grave, elle avait juste à prendre des antibiotiques. On est resté deux heures et j’ai reçu une facture de 10 000 dollars ! Alors je les ai appelé et ils m’ont dit „Ok, c’est 3000$ si vous payez maintenant !“. C’est passé de 10 000 à 3000$, comment c’est possible ?

Oui, et elle couvre aussi ma femme, maintenant. Ça coûte une fortune mais c’est une chose évidente, comme tout le reste. C’est pour ça qu’ils doivent garder la sécurité sociale, le gouvernement nourrit bien les plus pauvres, il devrait aussi garder son peuple en bonne santé, ça devrait être la première proposition de tous les politiciens.

Peu de gens le savent, alors que c’est comme ça même au Canada ! Vivre aux États-Unis, c’est vivre dans une bulle. Quand les gens pensent aux États-Unis, ils pensent à New-York ou San Francisco mais la majorité des Américains sont des chrétiens très conservateurs, qui ne reçoivent jamais la visite d’un étranger ou qui ne voyagent pas… (…) C’est quand-même un pays magnifique et il y a des tas d’endroits où j’aimerais vivre aux États-Unis, mais il y a des endroits magnifiques partout dans le monde, et au bout du compte, si je me casse la jambe, ça arrive, je n’ai pas envie de foutre ma vie en l’air. Alors j’irai dans un pays où je n’ai pas à me soucier de ça…

[highlight]U[/highlight]ne autre grande différence est qu’en Europe, je pense que la majorité des gens n’ont jamais touché à une arme à feu. Est-ce que tu as déjà tiré, toi ?
Non. J’en ai deux mais ce sont de vieux fusils que mon grand-père m’a donné il y a longtemps et qui ne marchent pas. Mais je peux aller tirer n’importe quand, il y a un stand de tir à côté de chez moi. Tu payes 20 dollars et tu tires.
[highlight]C[/highlight]ette fascination des Américains pour les armes m’a toujours étonné.
C’est profondément ancré dans la société, ça vient du temps où les colons Anglais montaient leurs propres armées, quand ça a été écrit dans la constitution. Comme la police était souvent corrompue, les gens s’étaient dit que s’il n’y avait que la police avec des armes, alors il fallait armer les gens pour s’en protéger. C’est ce que la plupart des gens pensent et si ça existe, on devrait avoir le droit de se protéger. (…) Si la loi passe un jour (celle sur la réglementation des armes à feu – NDLR), sois sûr que les gens de l’Amérique dont je te parlais ne lâcheront jamais leurs armes. Mais pour moi ça ne fera aucune différence.
[highlight]À[/highlight] quand remonte la dernière fois que tu as entendu un coup de feu ?
J’en entend souvent. J’habite à Long Beach, ça arrive de temps en temps.

One of your lasts posts on Instagram was about Bernie Sanders being the most legit candidate to your eyes. Aren’t you afraid to lose part of your audience, taking such positions ?
I don’t typically post political things and I wouldn’t consider myself a very political person. I never voted before but I feel like things have come to a boiling point when it’s kind of a really important time for the United States and the world in general. I don’t want to be a part of the problem and not feel like I helped to make something happen that I think is really important. So if I can use the small audience that I have to make a small difference and give him a few votes maybe, I’ll do that.
But you can lose some of that audience.
Yeah, but I don’t care about losing those people. No offense, but if they want Donald Trump to be the next president, then unfollow me, it’s fine !

No, you’re definitely the first person to talk to me about it.
Here in Europe, we don’t really assume our political beliefs in public. Is it something people do more in the US or did you just feel like it was time to do something ?
I guess it’s somewhat common in the US, especially in the middle of the country. People are bored so they get involved into politics and that’s what makes me believe of the possibility for Donald Trump to be president. I feel like this burning responsibility, you know, even with the risk of losing followers or whatever. I just feel like it’s really important right now. So it’s gonna take a lot of effort on everyone’s part to make it real otherwise it’ll just be this thing that almost happened, and instead of a candidate like him getting in, who could help a little bit, it could be this guy who just destroys everything, all the things that Obama has worked on or started would just be gone…
Like the social program.
Yeah, I just want a future in my country. If that guy Donald Trump gets president, I don’t know how much longer I wanna be in the US, and I love my home. I just want to have a future for my children, something decent that focuses on the important things. Less war, less overseas things, kids not to worry about going to college…
If he gets elected, what would you do ?
My wife is from Australia, so it’s always an option to me ! And I love Europe. There are options. It’d hard to leave obviously my family and friends but I just don’t know if I want to raise kids where someone like that has taken control. And I’d be very embarrassed for my country.
From here, Bernie Sanders looks like the closest of the kind of politicians we have here…
Yeah. I’ve spent a lot of time here or in Australia where it’s a similar government, and the young people are so much happier in these places because you don’t have to worry about these basic things like, you get sick and you just go to the doctor. America is scary, if you get sick, you whole life can be ruined. I took my wife to the hospital for a stomach ache and it was nothing serious and just had to take a few antibiotics. We were there for 2 hours and I got a bill of 10 000 dollars ! So we called about the bill and they said « OK, we’ll take 3000$ if you pay right now ! ». They just changed from 10 000 to 3000 like that, how can they do that ?
As a pro skater, do you have insurance ?
I do have health insurance, it now covers my wife. It’s really expensive but to me it’s obvious, like everything else. That’s why they have to keep the social program, if you can’t eat, the government provides you food, keeping your people alive and healthy, that should be your first interest as a politician.
But people in US know about how it is here, right ?
Not many people know, and even Canada is like that ! Living in America is like a bubble. When people think of America, they think of New York or San Franisco but the majority of the US is all this christian and, sorry to say, but conservative people in the middle who don’t get many visitors from out of the country or never get to travel… (…) Still it’s a beautiful country, don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of places I’d like to live in the United States, but there’s beautiful places everywhere and at the end of the day if I break my leg, things happen you know, I don’t want my life to be ruined. So I’d go to some place where you don’t have to worry about that…
Another big difference here in Europe is that I guess the majority of people never tried a real gun. Have you ever fired a gun ?
No. I have a couple of guns that my grand father gave to me a long time ago but they don’t work. But I can go whenever I want, there’s a shooting range just by my house. You pay 20$ and you shoot guns.
That fascination Americans have for guns always amazes me.
It’s deep seeded, it comes from the very beginning of the country when it was started by a bunch of british citizens making their own army, so it was written into our constitution. Because our police is corrupt a lot of times, people had this idea that if police is the only people with guns, then the people needs to be able to protect themselves from the police… It’s most people’s idea about it, and if it exists, then we should have the right to protect ourselves. (…) When that vote comes down (if the government decides to regulate guns – EN), all the people from the middle of America are not gonna let their guns go. Noway ! But it’ll make no difference for me.
When’s last time you heard a gunshot ?
I hear gunshots a lot. I live in Long Beach, you hear gunshots sometimes.
