Est-ce que tu peux faire la liste de toutes les marques de boards par lesquelles tu es passé ?
Oui, c’est possible, mais ça va prendre du temps ! Alors premièrement : Powell-Peralta. C’est Tony Hawk qui m’avait branché sur un salon à Biarritz quand je devais avoir douze ans. J’ai encore le fax qu’il avait envoyé à Powell Europe via Nicky Guerrero, où il parlait d’un « kid de Lyon dont j’ai oublié le nom… ». Donc j’ai été chez Powell pendant un an ou deux. Ensuite j’ai été chez Cops distribution, qui avait Real, Vision… Mais en truc officiel, après Powell, c’était New Deal, à l’époque des 411, quand on a commencé à filmer avec Fred Mortagne. C’est la Fireworks, la deuxième vidéo après Magical Mystery Video, qui avait fait venir les mecs de New Deal : Rene Matthyssen, Dave Duren, John Montessi… Mais ça n’a pas duré longtemps. Ils m’avaient fait venir là-bas, je dormais chez Matt Milligan, et je ne sais pas ce qu’il s’est passé, peut-être des malentendus ou alors ils voulaient refaire la marque… Bref, je me suis fait virer. Après ça, je suis allé à San Francisco, chez Josh Kalis qui m’avait fait rentrer en flow chez Alien Workshop. Ça devait être en 1997. Et un jour, à un tradeshow où je devais être officialisé chez Alien Workshop, dans l’hôtel le matin je croise Marcus McBride que je connaissais de Pier 7, qui me dit que la moitié du team 101 s’est barrée et que tout le monde va chez World Industries, donc qu’il y a moyen que je skate pour World. Donc moi j’arrive au salon, d’un côté il y avait le stand Alien Workshop et de l’autre le stand World Industries… À l’époque World c’était Kareem Campbell, Daewon, ça me faisait plus rêver qu’Alien, et ils m’avaient promis 300 dollars ! Du coup j’y suis allé… Je crois que Josh Kalis n’était pas super content ! Après ça s’est transformé en Déca, mais entre les deux, j’ai été une semaine chez Chocolate ! Marcus s’était fait virer de World, Kareem s’était barré, ça devenait Flameboy/Wet Willy, ça commençait à être vraiment laid et moi j’habitais chez Chico Brenes. J’avais la part’ qui devait sortir dans 411 et Chico l’avait vue. Il l’avait montré à Rick Howard et Mike Carroll, et ils avaient décidé de me prendre chez Chocolate. Donc j’y vais, je prends mon colis, je fais les papiers pour faire le visa, je rentre à Lyon et là Daewon m’appelle pour me dire qu’il lance Deca, que Marcus est dans le team et que je serai pro directement… Ils me font un « chauffe tête » alors je suis retourné avec eux ! Après ça, il y a eu Cliché…
Tu avais dit quoi aux gars de Chocolate ?
C’était avant Internet, je ne sais plus… Je les avais vu à un salon pus tard et Rick Howard, en rigolant, m’avait dit « Motherfucker ! ». Donc, une semaine chez Chocolate, et ensuite Deca jusqu’à ce que ça se termine…

J’ai l’impression que tu as longtemps hésité à aller chez Cliché, je me trompe ?
Non, Jérémie m’avait proposé au début mais j’étais dans mon trip à faire des aller-retours aux États-Unis… À la fin de Deca, Daewon relançait un truc qui s’appelait Artafact, je devais en faire partie mais au bout d’un moment, je n’avais plus de nouvelles… J’avais essayé d’appeler mais il ne répondait jamais. Je pense que si j’avais été sur place, ça aurait pu marcher… Aujourd’hui, je pense qu’avec Internet, ça aurait été plus facile, le fossé est moins grand, à l’époque, s’ils ne voyaient rien de toi pendant six mois, ils te zappaient…

Est-ce que tu as un regret ?
Bof, ça ne sert à rien d’avoir des regrets… mais j’aurais dû rester chez Chocolate ! Ah ah ! Mais j’ai bien rigolé chez Deca… Il faut dire aussi que je ne connaissais personne chez Chocolate à part Chico. Le fait qu’ils me fassent passer pro directement chez Deca, j’avoue que ça avait joué… Mais ça aurait été plus sage de rester chez Choco, je pense.
Quelle a été la période la plus faste, financièrement ?
Ça devait être au début de Cliché. J’avais des sponsors qui payaient bien comme Matix, Lakai…
Tu gagnais combien, en gros ?
Je ne sais pas si je devrais le dire, mais bon, y’a prescription, maintenant ! Je devais gagner dans les 5000 euros… Les marques de board payaient, les marques de vêtements, les marques de chaussures, les petites marques…
Tu avais des royalties sur les boards ?
Non, je n’ai jamais vraiment eu de royalties. J’avais des primes-paru. Mais à l’époque ce n’était que les photos, les vidéos ne comptaient pas. Enfin, c’était plus des bonus…
Quels souvenirs tu gardes de tes séjours en Californie ?
La première fois, je suis allé à San Francisco avec Malik Abdelsem. C’était un autre monde, bien avant Internet, il y avait vraiment un fossé entre l’Europe et les États-Unis. On ne parlait pas bien anglais, on ne comprenait pas trop… et eux aussi, ils n’étaient pas habitués à voir des Européens, mais ils étaient cools avec nous. On vivait dans des endroits vraiment crades, on squattait sur des matelas par-terre dans des skate-houses, des vieux hôtels… Mais c’était des bons souvenirs !

Tu restais plus de trois mois ?
En fait, je n’ai jamais eu le visa. Chocolate allait me le faire, mais Deca ne m’a jamais proposé. Comme ils me payaient les billets, je restais trois mois et je rentrais. Mais là où j’ai été con, c’est que la période légale, c’est pas trois mois, c’est 90 jours. Et souvent, je comptais « septembre, octobre, novembre, ok, ça fait trois mois, je rentre » mais je faisais parfois une semaine de plus. C’est arrivé plusieurs fois, et une fois, je suis tombé sur un douanier plus strict qui m’a renvoyé direct en France et qui m’a interdit l’accès pendant cinq ans. C’était à New York, en escale. En plus, j’étais avec ma copine de l’époque qui avait trouvé une école pour six mois à San Francisco. On avait même trouvé un appart’… Donc on est à New York, elle est avec moi, ils me bloquent et ils me raccompagnent direct dans l’avion… La bonne affiche quand tu montes dans l’avion accompagné de deux flics… Bref, ils donnent mon passeport au stewart et lui disent de me le rendre que quand on arrive à Paris. On arrive à Paris, j’attends que tout le monde descende et ils ne retrouvent pas mon passeport. Je suis resté dix heures à attendre jusqu’à ce que j’appelle un avocat qui me conseille d’aller directement à la police. Mais American Airlines, ils ne voulaient pas me laisser y aller, ils n’arrêtaient pas de me dire que mon passeport allait arriver dans le prochain avion, alors qu’il était perdu… C’est ma mère qui a retrouvé un vieux passeport périmé chez moi qui l’a faxé à l’aéroport et qui m’a finalement permis de sortir.
Est-ce que tu penses que ces 5 ans sans pouvoir aller au USA t’ont un peu bloqué dans ta carrière ?
Oui, un peu, je pense. Surtout que c’est arrivé au moment où Deca s’est terminé. Donc je n’ai pas pu retourner là-bas… Mais ça commençait à bouger en Europe, avec Link footwear notamment, donc je m’en étais pas trop mal sorti !

Ok, but it’s gonna take some time ! So first of all : Powell-Peralta. Tony Hawk had talked to me at a tradeshow in Biarritz when I was around 12. I still have the fax that he sent to Nicky Guerrero at Powell Europe on which he was talking about « that kid from Lyon I forgot the name »! So I was on Powell for a year or two. After that I got sponsored by Cops distribution that was doing Real, Vision… But the official board sponsor after Powell was New Deal, in the 411 days, when we started filming with Fred Mortagne. Fireworks, our second video after Magical Mystery, made the New Deal guys come over : Rene Matthyssen, Dave Duren, John Montessi… But it didn’t last very long. They flew me there and I was staying at Matt Milligan’s. I don’t really know what happened, maybe some misunderstandings or maybe they wanted to change the whole brand… Anyway, I got kicked out. After that I went to San Francisco and stayed at Josh Kalis’ who put me on flow for Alien Workshop. Probably 1997. And one morning, at a tradeshow where I was supposed to be officially introduced in the Alien Workshop team, I run into Marcus McBride that I knew from Pier 7, who tells me that half the 101 team left and that everyone is going to skate for World Industries and that I should join. So I’m going to the tradeshow where on one side was the Alien Workshop booth and the other the World Industries booth… Back then World was Kareem Campbell, Daewon, and I could relate more to them than Alien Workshop, and they said they’d give me 300$ ! So I made the move… I think Josh Kalis wasn’t so happy about it ! Then this all became Deca but in between I was on Chocolate for a week ! Marcus had got kicked out of World, Kareem had left and World was getting lame with the Flameboy/Wet Willy thing. Back then I was living at Chico Brenes’ who had seen my upcoming 411 part. He talked to Mike Carroll and Rick Howard and they decided to put me on Chocolate. So I get there, get my box and do the paperwork for the visa. I go back home in Lyon and Daewon calls me and tells me about Deca, that Marcus is on the team and that I’d turn pro straight away… He finally convinced me and got back on it ! And after that came Cliché…

What did you tell the Chocolate guys ?
That was before Internet, I’m not sure… I saw them later on another tradeshow and Rick Howard called me « Motherfucker ! », joking. So I was on Chocolate for a week, then Deca until the end of it.
I feel like you’ve hesitated to get on Cliché, am I right ?
That’s right, Jérémie asked me at the very beginning but I was happy going back and forth to the US… At the end of Deca, Daewon started Artafact and I was supposed to be part of it but after a while I wouldn’t hear from him anymore… I tried to call him but he’d never pick up the phone. I guess if I had been there it could have worked out… Today, I suppose it’s easier with the Internet, the gap is smaller. Back then when they wouldn’t hear from you in six month, you were out…
Do you have any regrets ?
Not really, regrets are useless… but I should have stayed on Chocolate ! Ah ah ! But it was fun with the guys on Deca… And I didn’t know anyone on Chocolate besides Chico. And when they told me that I’d be pro on Deca, I have to admit that made the difference… But it would have been smarter to stay on Chocolate, I guess.
Which period was the best, financially speaking ?
It might have been at the beginning with Cliché. I had sponsors that would pay good money like Matix or Lakai…
How much did you make, back then ?
I’m not sure I should say this but hey, that’s a long time ago ! I would earn around 5000 euros… Board companies would pay, clothing brands, shoe companies too, even the small ones…
Would you get royalties ?
No, I never really had royalties. I had photo incentives. Back then it would only be for photos, not videos, but it was more like a bonus.
What memories do you keep of your trips to California ?
The first time, I went to SF with Malik Abdelsem. It was another world, way before the Internet, the gap between the US and Europe was huge. We wouldn’t really speak English, we didn’t really get what was going on… and it was the same for them, they weren’t so used to meet European guys, but they were nice to us. We’d stay in filthy places, and sleep on mattresses on the ground in skate houses or sketchy hotels… But it’s all good memories !

Would you stay more than 3 months ?
I never had a visa. Chocolate was about to do it but Deca never did it. They would pay for my flights, I’d stay 3 months and I’d go home. But I didn’t really think about the legal time you’re allowed to stay which is not 3 months but 90 days. And sometimes I’d just be like « september, october, november, OK, that’s 3 months, I go home », and I would sometimes stay a week longer. And one time, I came across a more strict customs officer would sent me back to France straight away and banned me for 5 years. That was in New York on a transfer and I was with my girlfriend who had a 6 months scholarship planned in SF. We even had found an flat… So we’re in New York and they take me back to the next flight to France… Not the best feeling to hop on the plane with police officers on both sides… Anyway, they give my passport to the cabin crew and tell them to only give it back to me when we’re there. So we land in Paris, I wait for everyone to get off and they can’t find my passport. I stayed for 10 hours waiting for them to find it until I finally reached a lawyer on the phone who told me to go straight to the police. But American Airlines wouldn’t let me, they’d always say my passport was on the next flight, but it was just lost… It’s my Mom who found an old passport at home and faxed it to the airport that made me out.
Do you think this 5 year ban didn’t help your career ?
Yeah, a little bit, I guess because it happened right when Deca went out of business and I couldn’t go back there. But things were starting to change in Europe, especially with Link footwear, so in the end I was alright !
