PHOTOGRAPHY POTPOURRI: STEFAN SCHWINGHAMMER

I’m not a photographer. I’m an editor (for Solo skatemag) – and even that I’ve never studied. I’m just traveling around, visiting contests, doing interviews and taking snapshots wherever I go. I hope they’re entertaining.

Bright Tradeshow, Berlin, 2018
Part one of the serious dedication skateboard tattoos.
Dustin Dollin, Paris, 2018
After I had lunch with Dustin Dollin and Steve Olson for an interview I needed a rest.
For Dustin it was just a regular day. He went on to cook chicken soup for his wife
who was at the dentist during the interview.
Vans Park Series, Malmö, 2016
This moment, when a contest starts to look like Woodstock.
Jérôme Chevallier, Southern France, 2018
If he takes out the poles, this ramp moves back and forth while it is skated.
Jérôme performed in a circus with it. Now it’s in his backyard.
I never skated anything more fun.
Dylan Rieder, Barcelona, 2013
I shot this with my iPhone for instagram. Then it happend to get on the cover of
the Monster Skate Mag “Fashion Issue”. Having a magazine cover
is my four-touchdowns-in-one-high-school-game moment.
Daan van der Linden, Kiefersfelden, 2017
There was this project in an abandoned cement factory. Daan arrived the night before in a snowstorm,
with a pumping boombox and a black eye.
As somebody who’s slightly afraid of heights, crossing this room in the cement factory on
a wobbly corridor made of gratings was one of the most frightening moments of my life.
But also one of the few Indiana Jones moments.
Leo Valls, Bordeaux, 2018
Leo skating his living room how he likes it. With one of his best friends Sergio and in
the middle of street life, interacting with the environment.
Fred Gall, Copenhagen, 2016
Even Fred Gall might have never thought that he’d once will be drinking Crémant during a skate contest in
the historical town hall of Copenhagen.
Jason Dill, Los Angeles, 2018
While moving out of his apartment in West Hollywood Jason Dill was still down
to do an interview between packing boxes and took his time to tell stories for hours.
Bright Tradeshow, Berlin, 2018
Part two of the serious dedication skateboard tattoos.
Ishod Wair, Berlin, 2016
I don’t know why, but I think Ishod Wair is the person I shot the most portraits of.
This is my favorite one.
Pontus Alv, Copenhagen, 2016
Before the “I like it here inside my mind…” premier started,
Pontus took his time for some drawings to decorate the space.
Rowan Zorilla, Bali, 2018
I pretty randomly went to Bali and just as randomly there was this Thrasher
Skate Rock concert happening. I could hardly breath in the club because of the heat
and humidity, but the youngsters had fun.
Lizard King, Berlin, 2018
The first photo I shot in 2013 at Bright tradeshow in Berlin.
Five years later Lizard wasn’t drinking or doing drugs anymore and was a father already.
But you can see it in his face, that he’s still down for some shenanigans.
Victor Pellegrin, Milan, 2018
“Do you want to see something disgusting?”, Victor asked.
Then he took off his shoes.
Tolya Titaev & Gosha Rubchinskiy, Paris, 2018
Tolia and Gosha are friendly guys but as soon as I turned the camera towards them,
they put on this look on their faces that made me think they might be a mafia hitman duo.
Ed Templeton, Munich, 2018
If my 17 year old me, while watching “Welcome to Hell” for the first time,
would’ve known that he’ll get the chance to meet Ed Templeton at some point in life,
I’m pretty sure I’d have wetted my pants.
Vans Spring Classic, Naples, 2014
Vans built a miniramp on the beach of Naples and when I arrived there I found this written on some rocks nearby.
I thought it’s funny.
Public Domaine Exhibition, Paris, 2011
This skateable kitchen was part of an exhibition and even ended up on a Thrasher cover.
When we were there, I filmed my friend Janosch pushing back and forth in it.
He put the video on YouTube with the title: „My new Room.“
The video has 1.3 million views to date…
Janosch threw a party to celebrate the million.
What I love most are the comments doubting that this is his new room…
Street League, Barcelona, 2015
That’s how it looks like if you’re a VIP skateboard media representative.
Street League, Barcelona, 2013
Extreme babysitting.
Red Bull Munich Feinkost, München, 2021
For this King of the Road like event, one of the challenges was to do a hippie jump.
We were super proud to find a real hippie in Munich close by SHRN and Felix Adler
– normally the Solo staff photographer – did a picture perfect hippie jump.
So I had to take the photo.
Team Trouble 2021 BBQ, Laax, 2021
Laax is not only a good destination for snowboarding, it also has a crew that pushes skateboarding to new heights.
Here some old snowboard ramps got skated at 2,252 meters on Crap Sogn Gion.
Ave Shoe Release, New York, 2019
A lot of skate shops were invited for this release event. It was lots of fun hanging out with the guys and exploring the city. But the highlight was Yaw from Arrow & Beast and Benny from Ben-G doing a “Rush Hour” reenactment.
Solo Teaser Shooting, Cologne, 2015
When we started Solo we filmed a short teaser clip to hype up the first issue.
Oli Tielsch himself was doing some crooked grinds while, Lukas Schepers, the intern at the time
(who is doing his PhD nowadays and is way smarter than all of us) was helping for safety reasons.
Pontus Guest Editor Issue, Malmö, 2016
We visited Pontus in Malmö for our first guest editor issue and went on some spot sightseeing.
I normally don’t do skate photos, simply because I don’t know the craft.
But I’m more than happy that this one turned out okay.
Best Foot Forward Contest, Innsburck, 2021
While being at skateboard events I need to have a break once in a while.
In this case I was sitting on a bench at a beautiful park, enjoying a sunny autumn day and having ice cream
as I saw this guy walking by. He needed a little break as well. I hadn’t met Ian Michna in person so far
but we had a lovely chat about skateboarding and why you sometimes need to step out
of the skate life for a second.
CPH Open, Copenhagen, 2017
This moment when life feels like there’s a glitch in reality that leads you
to a land of pure happiness, where everything is possible vs the moments after,
when reality comes back hot into your head.
