En novembre 2016, BA officialisait la rumeur qui courrait à son sujet depuis des années. Un geste salué par la ‚communauté skate‘ et qui a même intéressé tout un tas de médias grand public, allez savoir pourquoi, mais qui a peu généré de messages de haine, comme on aurait pu s’y attendre (j’en connais que ça dérange vraiment…). Pour savoir ce qu’il en est vraiment, le mieux était de s’adresser directement à lui.

Selon toi, c’est quoi un hater ?
BA : Un hater, c’est quelqu’un qui se fait chier et qui est probablement un peu frustré.
Ok, je demande ça parce qu’on m’a traité de hater…
Ah ! Mais il n’y a rien de mal non-plus, je pense. On s’expose tellement de nos jours qu’il y a un prix à payer, il faut s’attendre à des réactions.
Est-ce que tu en as eu beaucoup, après ton coming out ?
Je n’ai pas eu beaucoup de mauvais commentaires. J’ai eu la chance d’avoir beaucoup d’amis pour m’aider à raconter mon histoire. C’était une sorte de bras d’honneur au monde qui ne laissait aucune place à ceux qui voulaient dire quelque chose (de mauvais à son sujet – NDLR). J’ai même eu Jake Phelps et tout un tas de gens pour dire « on s’en fout (who cares) »…
Il y a eu des commentaires stupides ?
Oui, bien-sûr, mais je ne les lis pas, j’ignore.
Qu’est-ce qui a changé depuis le mois de novembre 2017, pour toi ?
La meilleure chose, c’est que des gens m’ont dit que mon histoire les avait aidés à faire leur propre coming out, et enfin être eux-mêmes.
Les gens viennent directement t’en parler ?
Oui, c’est fou ! Tous les jours à New York, des gens viennent vers moi, me serrent la main et me disent : « Merci ! Merci ! » Je marche dans la rue et des types sortent des bars et me sautent dessus pour me dire ça ! Je sais qu’il y aura aussi des homophobes, mais…
Mais ce n’est pas encore arrivé.
Non.
Tu crois que si tu étais plus petit, ce serait différent ?
Ah ah ! Oui, ce serait différent, j’aurais un peu peur !
Qu’est-ce que tu détestes dans le skate ?
Les gens qui poussent du mauvais pied ! Ah ah, non, je ne sais pas… Mais je n’aime pas trop le mot haïr, je préfère dire « je n’aime pas » à la place. Il y a des choses que je n’aime pas, mais je ne hais pas grand-chose. J’aime bien donner une chance à tout le monde. Et je le pense vraiment.
Oui, je pense aussi qu’un hater est plus quelqu’un qui « n’aime pas » plutôt qu’il hait vraiment.
Les gens vont changer grâce à Internet, ils vont finir par apprendre ce qui est bien ou mal, et décider par eux-même dans le futur.
Pourtant, il y a tellement de place pour les haters sur Internet !
Eh bien laisse-les haïr, laisse-les avoir une vie de merde !

In november 2016, BA said the rumor that was running after him for a while was true. The skateboarding world wasn’t so surprized and the response was positive. For some reason, this even went outside the skateboarding world and no hate comments were to be found. How did the homophobic skaters react (we all know some) ? Well the best was to just ask him.
According to you, what is a hater ?
A hater is somebody who is bored and probably unhappy with his life.
Ok, I’m asking this because I’ve been called a hater.
Ah ! But there’s nothing wrong with that too, I think. We expose ourselves so much these days, and there’s is a price to pay, you gotta expect somebody’s response.
Did you get a lot of bad feedback after your coming out ?
I did not get too many crazy bad things. I was very lucky that a lot of my friends helped to tell my story. It was kind of a big F-U to the world and there was no room for the ones who wanted to say something (bad – EN). I had Jake Phelps and a lot of people to say « who cares »…
But was there some stupid comments ?
Yeah, sure, but I don’t read it, I go on.
So what has changed since last November 2017, for you ?
The best thing is that people have told me that my story’s helped them to come out and be themselves.
People come to you and talk to you about it ?
Yeah, it’s crazy ! Every single day in New York city, people walk up, shake my hand and say « thank you, thank you ! » I’m walking in the street and people run out of bars to grab me ! I know there’s gonna be homophobic people too, but…
It hasn’t happened.

Do you think that if you’d be a smaller person, it’d be different ?
Ah ah ! Yeah, it’d be different, I’d be a little scared !
What do you hate in skateboarding ?
People that don’t push right ! Ah ah, no, I don’t know ! But I don’t really like the word hate, I don’t really hate, I like to say the word dislike instead. Hate is a strong word. There are things that I dislike, but I don’t hate much. I love to give everybody a chance. And I really mean that.
Yeah, I think a hater is more of a disliker.
People are gonna change because of the internet, learn what is right or wrong and decide themselves for the future.
But there is so much room for haters on the internet !
Well let them hate ! Let them suck at life !
